SHOES WORTH KEEPING: SHOOLI’S GUIDE TO WHITE SNEAKERS– FOR NON-SNEAKERHEADS
There’s nothing quite like a fresh, crisp pair of new white sneakers. It might just be the best. We get that. But no matter how careful you are, or you think you are, eventually they aren’t so white anymore. Whether it be dirt or just oxidation from, you know, wearing them outside (*gasp* yeah, we think sneakers are meant to be worn).
“SO, HOW DO I KEEP MY SNEAKERS WHITE?”
1. THE MATERIAL MATTERS
It’s true, it really does. Coming from people who clean our fair share of white sneakers, some materials are generally much easier to keep white.
Canvas, for example, is generally quite difficult to clean, especially in terms of getting your shoes back into pristine condition.
Leather, on the other hand, is much easier to maintain its’ white color. Not only is it easier to get the dirt off of, but even when natural oxidation begins to take place, shooli has white shoe polish and white spray shoe polish that can be used on leather to bring your sneakers back to a crisp white! …
And if at all possible, avoid cheap pleather! When pleather sneakers eventually start to peel away from the shoe, there is little that can be done to repair them, and they end up in the garbage…. that’s not good. We understand the ethical concerns people have with using leather, so if you do choose to opt for faux leather, do a little research– Dr. Martens offers some good options, and you can’t go wrong with Nike!
2. TIE & UNTIE YOUR SHOES
Sneakerheads would NEVER try to jam their foot into their sneakers, risking damage to the back heel. As annoying as it may seem, it’s a little extra step that can really preserve the life off your shoes. How do you think sneakerheads are always wearing shoes in MINT condition?
3. MORE FREQUENT CLEANS
We promise we’re not trying to scam you when we say that it is better to send your sneakers now and then, rather than waiting until they look DESTROYED after taking a risk of wearing them on a few rainy, muddy days, and then ALSO the zombie pub crawl. Whoops. Now that’s scary. (But no judgement, we’ve all done it….).
While destroyed white sneakers make for a killer before and after photo for our shooli work portfolio, in reality it is simply much more difficult to restore them back to their pristine white color (though, trust us, we can still get them looking pretty great if this happens). So send them in once a month or so! Luckily our clean package is pretty stellar
4. A COMMON OCCURRENCE THAT SHOOLI CAN HELP WITH!
Here’s another little fun tidbit of knowledge: It’s pretty common for the inside of the heel to be worn down and get holes in. BUT, we can repair that with a light leather patch on the heels to prevent further wearing and to make them comfortable again!
5. SO WHAT SNEAKERS DO WE LIKE?
One of our team members, Shelby, wears her AF1’s almost every single day, and has shooli clean them about once a month, and hers still look impressively white. She swears by them.
A slightly higher price point, but great for those who know and trust FRYE’s quality.
Everlane offers these genuine leather sneakers, with sustainability in mind, for such a reasonable price!
Dr. Martens is known for their boots, but we love these all white, genuine leather sneakers.
